At their best, archives deepen not just understanding, but empathy.

Within archives, visual collections carry unique potential. We increasingly understand our world and communicate through images. Because the first impact of a photograph may be purely visual, images can avoid interpretation imposed by words, slipping past preconceptions to touch the heart.

And yet, it is a very rare image indeed that can tell its story on its own. Context is essential to understanding more fully what has been seen. Too often, visual collections remain difficult to discover, poorly described, or separated from essential context—diminishing their value as records of who we were and what we have become.

Today, AI offers new ways to surface that context. It can reconstitute relationships dispersed across collections and make material newly meaningful. The challenge is to gain that capacity without unmooring information from evidence, and while protecting the integrity of documentary images.
